A mysterious and powerful individual. We don't have many concrete facts on Zen.
He uses magitech, likes lemons, dislikes strawberries and grapes, he's ambidextrous with a preference for his right hand, he enjoys sitting by the river and going to mountain tops to stare at the sky, particularly the stars.
The Midnight Black has categorized him as Threat Level 11 (Do Not Engage).
Zen wears a silk vest with dres shoes, a gold bracelet on his right wrist and several gold rings on his left hand. He has fair tan skin, wavy black hair, and golden eyes.
Zen's history is very mysterious. He is from a city known as Parial. He had a daughter, and the day she was born was the happiest of his life. He also had a cat a long time ago named Mittens. He found it but he wasn't the one who named it. She was black with white paws.
He used to be a Clockmaker, which was some kind of specific position relating to machines.
We saw a vision of him dropping the sky cities and fighting an avatar of Sarenrae. We also saw a vision of him stepping through cracks in the sky.
We met Zen in Canis as he was interrogating Amity about the Aseth Coins. Once he killed her, we fought him, the fight starting quickly after Vermillion hit him over the head with a frying pan. He easily outclassed us, then let us go once we backed off.
Zen revealed he'd bought residuum from the Midnight Black before. A bar or two had gone missing, causing them to post more guards.
We encountered him by chance in Lunarcoast when we investigated the missing archivists. He wanted a book of artifacts. He got it after easily bypassing the archive's antimagic, then got the method of deciphering it from the archivists. Once again, he let us go. Later, we encountered him in Kenlune, where we made a deal. He got the mirror artifact from the elves, and our aid in future matters, and he would help us with our goals.
He met up with us in Goldthrone to receive the catalyst and for the bloodpits sparring. We invited him inside and offered him cucumber sandwiches. Sindri handed over the Catalyst and asked him about the yellow vials, which he then explained. When we explained how the guild had them, he checked his watch and said they were far ahead of schedule. He's also concerned when we mention the mythallar. Then, an odd storm begins and Soteria returns, with her and Zen exchanging cold greetings. Soteria then explains the bloodpit setup and we discuss the masquerade before Soteria takes Zen to Enoran. It's worth noting that Zen was here personally, not his simulacrum.
Then, the bloodpits sparring happens, the Dragon Prince vs Prince Charming
Afterwards, he complimented Harring at dinner and someone called Zen attractive. He left and promised to return the next day for the real sparring. Later, we found him talking privately with Tearson and neither would reveal what about. Finally, he and Vermillion sparred for real, with all of us buffing her. Just as he's about to defeat her, he stops and forfeits before handing her a superior healing potion. We then start asking him questions about things he hasn't revealed. He talks about how we wouldn't remember, how he failed then and he won't again, and how given Vermillion's strength, we're almost ready for a peak behind the curtain, as he believes he's found the next artifact. He notices as Sindri reads his lips. Nerio then gives him a cupcake which seems to get an emotional reaction from him, saying it smells just like how he remembers it. Corbyn then asks about the crown and Damnriel, which confuses Zen, who asked "why you?" before explaining that the power those entities have would be useful, but he'd never consider Damnriel as he wants to bring everything to an end. Zen theorizes that Corbyn may be the key to release Damnriel.
Sindri asked Zen about the magical storm over Goldthrone, to which Zen began investigating and found it centered around Goldthrone and there was a recent divine shockwave. He said he'd continue to look into it.
During a fight with an ancient water elemental, Sindri sent to Zen begging for help, and he arrived, banishing the creature with Vermillion inside it. He then left for the Water Plane to retrieve Vermillion, Cedric, and Tearson
In the middle of the storm, Zen opened a portal for Vermillion to go through but he remained there to find Tearson and Cedric.
Finally, Zen opened a portal which dumped water and arrived with Tearson and Cedric. Zen realized he interrupted Corbyn's resurrection ritual and backed off. Once it was done, we met with him in the tavern and he seemed impressed by the display. Zen then cast a spell to prevent eavesdropping and revealed he located the next artifact, the Heart of Yraytos. He explained Yraytos and what we'd have to do. He also explained that this storm didn't have a divine shockwave like the one in Goldthrone. In regards to the mission, he reveals that he has a team waiting for us there already, and we notice he's frustrated at having to rely on others, and putting people he cares about in danger. Sindri warned him of the elves and midnight black incoming and Corbyn mentions Mandall. Zen advises we leave valuables behind to avoid theft. Lark leaves his pocketwatch with Zen. Before sending us off, Zen helped us tend to Lensfield, specifically working with Sindri to repair and rebuild. He did it easily a few times until he ran out of spell slots, then merely held pieces for Sindri to cast Mending.
Later as we met with Zen at the tavern, Sindri had him fix the mishap that was still affecting him. Zen then watched as Sindri left the Gem of Vitality with Tearson, and it was evident that he wanted it. Before Zen teleported us, Sindri asked if it'd cause harm, which Zen said was odd, making a snide comment indirectly at Tearson. Lark left Zen with the ring of truth and his pocketwatch, asking him to return Lark's things to the previous owners if he doesn't return, which confused Zen. He informed us that his informant is on the other side, then he opened the portal and we stepped through.
Corbyn then used Kayden's sending stone to ask Zen about his intentions for the residents of Yraytos, to which Zen clarified nobody would die from the removal of the heart. Later, Kayden sent another message to Zen revealing the money issue for our transportation out. Zen reealed he predicted this and had him tell Sindri to check his bag, revealing 5500 gold. Sindri then sent to him asking how he did that, to which he revealed it was while they were rebuilding Lensfield together.
At the Wizard Towers, Nerio Sent to Zen, telling him all was well and asking how Lensfield was. He reported the elves teleported in with supplies, Tearson left abruptly claiming to return the next day, more supplies were coming th enext day, food was stable, there'd be a funeral service later, and everything was alright.
The next day, Zen tried to use the sending stone but Nerio was wildshaped, so he Sent to Vermillion. He revealed the queen arrived in Lensfield, so he had to leave to avoid causing trouble.
Sindri used the Sending Stone to ask about siphoning energy from the Heart, to which Zen said it was impossible. Sindri then asked about getting a power source for a magical device in order to save the wizard towers, which we'd need in 48 hours. Zen said he could do it if he used a majority of the funds he planned to give us but he'd deliver it once Yraytos dissolved.
He came to help us when we needed him to heal Tearson, then had a private meeting with Tearson.
While we were there, he got a magical battery to help our friends at the Wizard Towers, then interrupted Lukar's ambush to save Soteria, Harring, and Vera. He was wounded, and Tearson brought all of them to one of Zen's secret outposts, where he was then healed. He then delivered the battery to the wizards and Sent to Sindri to let him know.
We met up with him at Soteria's house upon our return to trade info about Lukar and the Heart of Yraytos. He also revealed some background information, as well as some of his interests. He then agreed to come back for a special dinner and to see Sindri identify Nerio's curse. He was surprised by Sindri sharing the spell he made specifically to fight Zen, then expressed genuine interest in working with Sindri on a co-op spell, aas he's impressed by how different our way of thinking is.
We talked more about serious matters regarding Tearson and Lukar, and Zen noticed us dodging info, to which he implied he was already aware. He also gave us a scroll to pass on to the elves to patch a vulnerability in their teleportation wards. Corbyn later Sent to Zen to get permission for Sindri to study it.
He came to join us for the dinner and a lot happened. He revealed that he cared a little too much about our lives. He also drunkenly revealed that he had a daughter, which he instantly regretted. Our insight revealed he probably hasn't acknowledged that out loud recently. And that he probably related the passion he saw in his daughter to Vermillion's passion for the bloodpits. But then his mask went back on.
After the dinner, he paced around Nerio and Sindri as they identified Nerio's curse. He then said it was very helpful information for his efforts to undo it for us.
After our fight with the revenants, Nerio used the stone to send to Zen for help in healing Sindri's shattered arm, and explained Sindri's refusal to waste residuum, his reattached arm, Corbyn's broken arm, and the revenant wolves. He agreed to meet with us possibly tomorrow (S114).
